Rutgers may have just turned a corner this weekend.
The Scarlet Knights (5-4, 2-4) snapped a four-game losing streak with a much-needed 26-19 win over Minnesota on Saturday. Their first victory over the Golden Gophers was an emotional one for head coach Greg Schiano, who faced his former protégé PJ Fleck, and quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, who faced his former team.
The result puts Rutgers back in the bowl game conversation, stabilizing a season that was spiraling. The Scarlet Knights recalibrated themselves defensively during the bye week, with Schiano remarking that coordinator Joe Harasymiak stripped the unit down to the studs and rebuilt it, and it resulted in arguably the most important win of the season.
The Rutgers Rant is back to recap the Scarlet Knights’ victory, how it changes the outlook for the rest of the fall and whether this defensive resurgence is sustainable. We also touch on the men’s basketball team’s matchup with Saint Peter’s on Monday night, the women’s soccer team’s 5-0 loss to UCLA in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament game and more.
